Upstate Yoga Institute

Offering classes in Syracuse since 1983, Upstate Yoga Institute was founded to transmit the teachings of classical yoga in a spirit of clarity and authenticity. Our late founder and  loving teacher, Mary-Lou Skelton, received these teachings in one on one lessons with her
Indian teachers, world famous masters Sri Krishnamacharya and T.K.V. Desikachar. All the teachers at the Institute are professional teachers who have made long-time training and practice commitments in the tradition. Their passion is to guide others towards increased health and overall well-being.
Whether they are teaching a group class or a private yoga class, they strive to respect the ancient model of learning where the instructions was tailored to meet the needs of the participants. They present the teachings in a way that is consistent with the philosophy of yoga. Yoga postures are introduced in a gradual and systematic manner in coordination with proper breathing. People who are new to yoga can be sure they are learning the postures in a correct manner while becoming more conscious of their breathing. In a very short time, conscious breathing becomes a form of meditation that calms restless thoughts, supports energy, and strengthens the immune and nervous systems. Over time, our ultimate goal is to lead students towards an independent practice that will bring the benefits of yoga into their daily lives.
