Mindfulness Meditation

6 Week Mindful Stress Reduction Program

starting Friday June 21st, 5:30 PM

The weekly sessions will take place on Fridays, 5:30 to 7:30 PM and will introduce the skills of mindfulness meditation and yoga as tools to manage the stress encountered in daily life. The program also includes a silent retreat on Saturday  July 27th, 8AM to 12:30 PM. Here participants will be able to explore more fully their newly acquired skill of mindfulness in meditations experienced in the program  along with other types of meditations

Based on Jon Kabat Zinn’s MBSR* recognized model, the series will include pertinent information, repeated meditation practices, and group discussions that will support the development of a more mindful attitude towards one’s relationship with stress.  The yoga portion of this course is gentle, with individual adaptations to suit the ability of each participant.  Please be aware that this course does not meet the requirements for becoming a certified MBSR teacher but is intended only to establish one’s personal daily meditation practice.  Participants have reported that this program have had lasting positive influences on their personal and professional lives.

The series, home studies, and access to guided meditations to support home practicing has a fee of $385.
A free introductory session will be held on June 14th at 5:30 to 6:30 PM for those wishing to explore the program and/ or register.   If interested in attending the session or joining the series, please contact David Jacobs at info@upstateyogainstitute.com.

The instructor, David Jacobs, received his training for teaching MBSR, at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, Center of Mindfulness, where the MBSR program was developed.  David taught the MBSR program to Syracuse University students through the University’s Counseling Center from 2008 to 2015. He also offered the course to the faculty and staff through the University Wellness Initiative. In addition to being fully trained to share MBSR with others, David is an experienced yoga teacher in the Krishnamacarya-Desikachar lineage.

* MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) is a medically respected program that was developed at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979. Thirty years later, the program forms the basis of therapeutic interventions for anxiety, depression, OCD, and PTSD. Schools, businesses, sports programs, and even the armed services use the program to reduce stress and support meeting goals and potentials.
